Usually, I just tell them at checkout. I also make sure it’s on the salon’s website on the Policies page.

Thank you Tina! I have learned and continue to learn so much from your blog and from your book, thank you sharing your knowledge! I do still struggle, as many do, with standing up for myself but the information you share and the matter-of-fact way that you present it has given me the courage to take baby steps:)

If you’re truly an independent contractor (meaning–a self-employed booth renter), you should have the ability to set your own prices and policies. If that’s the case, you can totally move forward with or without them. I’m willing to bet that their clients will pressure them to do the same once they find out you do it. A lot of clients truly believe we’re worth more than we charge. I often hear from my clients that they’re scared to raise prices because they worry their clients will leave them. They’re shocked to discover that the response is quite the opposite. (My friends Maggie and Anna can both comment more about that, as each of them recently raised their rates and experienced the same, lol.)

Did I list bartenders? I certainly don’t consider trained bartenders to be in an unskilled position whatsoever, lol, actually the opposite. What I mean by entry-level, are positions that anyone can do, regardless of their education level. I never implied that I felt these workers don’t deserve living wages, just that comparing a worker in a position that doesn’t require education to a worker in a position that requires schooling and licensure is like comparing apples to oranges. At no point did I undermine anyone in any position.
